Is your family ready for back to school? September marks the start of school for many kids, which inevitably means children need new school supplies, easy lunch choices, and new fall outfits. Our simple tips can help maximize your back to school budget, make packing lunches easier and get your kids excited about starting school!
Keep Them Positive
Point out the positive aspects of starting school to create positive anticipation about the first day of class. They will see old friends and meet new ones. Talk with them about positive experiences they may have had in the past at school or with other groups of children.
Safety in Numbers
Find another child in the neighborhood with whom your child can walk to school or ride on the bus.
Stock Up On Easy Lunch Items
Packing lunches for several kids is much easier if you can include go-to lunch items you know your kids will enjoy. For kids’ lunches, I generally pack a sandwich, bag of chips or pretzels, fruit, cheese slices or yogurt, Welch’s Fruit ‘n Yogurt Snacks and a drink. If it is a new school for your child, attend any available orientations and take an opportunity to tour the school before the first day. Bring the child to school a few days prior to class to play on the playground and get comfortable in the new environment.
Meet Them After School
If you feel it is needed, drive your child (or walk with her) to school and pick her up on the first day, and get there early on the first day to cut down on unnecessary stress.
Introduce Yourself to Their Teacher
Make sure to touch base with your child’s new teacher at the beginning or end of the day so the teacher knows how much you want to be supportive of your child’s school experience.
Shop the Sales & Buy in Bulk
Save money on school supplies by checking the store ads for back to school sales. You can also purchase items such as notebooks, pens, mechanical pencils, and scissors in bulk from a warehouse supply store and divide them among several children or families. Once school begins, you can even score extra savings as stores begin discounting school supplies to clear space for holiday merchandise.
What’s your favorite part about going back to school? Kids will love school much more if you can make their first impressions of the school year fun!
