Let’s get one thing straight – we are living in a world full of narcissism, nepotism, advantage and favouritism. There are some things that you will never be able to do to achieve a certain position in a company unless you are willing to let your morals slip, are a blood relative or have done something out of the ordinary to achieve it. Sometimes people who are in the position have actually earned it, and it’s these positions that you need to look out for.
If you’re unsure of how to better yourself to further your career, take heed of these top 5 tips.
Get To Know Your Boss
Do you know what your boss’ favourite hobby is? What TV show they like to watch when they get home to unwind? What their sense of humour is? If you’re not sure of the very basics (i.e. would totally suck at Secret Santa), then there’s little chance that they know much about you, either. Get on board with them and if they have the time to spare, make the time to get to know them. They’re only human after all, just like you. Nobody is untouchable.
Excel At Your Subject
Being good at what you do is one thing, but being excellent is another subject entirely. Taking extra classes at a place such as Raritan Valley Community College to increase your knowledge of the fundamentals of your job is a brilliant thing to do both for your own personal benefit and to show to the company that you work for that you are serious about what you’re doing. It may help with questions that you are too afraid to ask for fear of looking stupid, but no question can ever be a stupid question if it helps you to find out the answer.
Know Your Company
Knowing the ins and outs of your company and how it works can be vital in securing a new role. Getting to know how quickly people progress and move up the ranks is the ability to get a good background of when your chance for promotion may appear.
Go Over And Above
Those who work late claiming that they need to finish their work are often considered the ones who are working hard, but it’s the hard workers who get their work done in the time allocated to them. Going over and above means helping out those who haven’t managed their time wisely enough to do so, and asking if your boss would like you to take on anything else. It may seem like a chore at the time, but it sets a precedent that others can’t.
Don’t Climb Over People
If you are deliberating stamping down people to get to the top, this will be noted. If you are going to be in a position where people have to answer to you, there is a certain amount of respect that needs to be gained. Those who make their way up from the implemented failure of others won’t be seen as great – they’ll be seen as irritating. Choose your path wisely.
